The Buzz About North Forty Beer

The name “North Forty” even provides a historic-tie to the Douglas County as it relates to the classic 80-acre homestead and what is commonly referred to as the “north 40” and “back 40.” And if you visit Oregon’s “Timber Capital,” you will most likely seat yourself close to some authentic, bearded loggers and hear this term used. Mills explained the “north 40” to typically be the unadulterated, more raw section. “You leave the north 40 more wild. Conceptually, this is how we see Douglas County... More

The National Neon Sign Museum Lights Up

An eastward drive from Portland through the Columbia River Gorge brings a few colorful surprises. There is, of course, the landscape’s gradient shift from evergreen to golden. An hour spent cruising along the river on Interstate 84 sees the moss-draped cliffs and basalt spires of the national scenic area give way to the sagebrush-speckled hills of the Columbia Plateau. And then there is The Dalles, an unexpected home to the dazzling National Neon Sign Museum, which only recently opened its doors to the public. More

Where are some of the best places to find sea glass?

Oregon is not known for sea glass and I don't know of any beaches that have a reputation as being better locations than others. Since most beach glass comes from bottles that have been floating in the ocean and come to rest on beaches pushed ashore by winds and tidal conditions, glass can be distributed anywhere along Oregon's 363-mile coastline. Generally, beaches with gravelly deposits are the best places to find sea glass which can vary greatly with the season and tidal conditions. Typically sand... More

Which Willamette Valley town offers quaint inns and wineries?

Sounds like a fun trip you have planned. My top recommendation for a trip that has all of the above (out of the way pretty wineries, good food, interesting accommodations and a close flight) would be for you to focus your trip on the southern portion of the Willamette Valley. The entire Willamette Valley is more than 100 miles long, with wonderful wineries throughout. I don't know how long your trip will be, but if you don't want to spend your entire trip driving, I'd... Ride the Whiskey Run Mountain Bike Trail

There’s a place on Oregon’s South Coast where you can ride through a coastal forest on ribbons of clay dirt, with moderate climbs and gentle descents. The tree canopy shelters you from rain, and the 10 miles of cross country-style trail system will eventually expand to about 30, connecting to the beach with views of the ocean and stunning coastline. My Heart is in Oregon

It was July, 1992, when I rolled into Oregon. We drove from Chicago in our red '87 Nissan Sentra, through flat landscapes and peak summer heat. When mountains began to appear in the horizon, I joked to my friend, "See those mountains there? I bet you those mountains are Oregon." I was right. More

The Wild and Scenic Snake River flows through the rugged Hells Canyon, and at 1,078 miles long, it is the largest tributary to the Columbia River. Travelers on the Oregon trail journeyed through Snake River canyons on their way to the Willamette Valley.  Today visitors can enjoy rafting, kayaking and jet boat tours on the river, as well as hikes along the river. Kid-Friendly Waterfall Adventures in Southern Oregon

What is it about waterfalls that makes them so captivating? My husband, Gary, and I took a Southern Oregon waterfall tour with the kids and it was one of our best trips of all time. We enjoyed every moment of the serenity — the quiet meditation as we hiked to each waterfall was so calming and surreal. We kept our eyes wide open so we didn't miss a thing: a squirrel crossing our path; a lizard lounging on a rock; or the first misty moment... More
